This week we have been practising the column method for addition. Write these out in your book and complete. Remember to set it out neatly writing one digit per square.
S2S
1) Draw a margin 3 squares in.
2) Leave a square then write Th, H, T U.
3) Write the sum out and make sure the digits are in the correct column.
4) Start with the units and add. (If the answer is 10 or over, write the units and carry the ten.
5) Repeat with the tens column. (Carry to hundreds if needed.)
6) Repeat with hundreds. (Carry to Thousands if needed.)

Use the column method to solve these word problems:

1) Jack bought a comic for £1.34 and a fizzy drink for £3.52. How much did he spend altogether?

2) What is the sum of four hundred and twenty six and two hundred and thirty?

3) James receives £5.50 from his aunt for his birthday and he has £2.34 in his piggy bank. How much money does he have saved now?

4) Mrs Wharton counted 147 green lunch cards and 124 red lunch cards. How many lunch cards were counted?
