English home learning 16/6/16

Year 4 Home Learning                 English       16th June 2016 (for three weeks)

This week we have introduced the children to a new genre of writing. We will be learning how to write a discussion text or a balanced argument. The features will include:

1.     A title in the form of a question.

2.   An opening paragraph to introduce the topic

3.   Arguments and evidence for the question.

4.   Arguments and evidence against the question.

5.   A final summary and a personal opinion.

Over the next couple of weeks we would like the children to prepare a short talk (no more than three minutes) – to follow the features detailed above to present to the class. The children will be taught how to do this in class but will need to prepare their talk at home. The talks will take place in class from Tuesday 5th July onwards. The children may use visual aids to support their presentation if they wish but the teachers are marking their speaking skills and knowledge of the subject.

Children should choose to base their talk on one of the following subjects:

1.     Should animals be kept in zoos?

2.   Should all children have school dinners?

3.   Should children be taught to swim at school?

4.   Should all families grow their own fruit and vegetables?

5.   Should there be a time / age limit on electronic devices for children?

6.   Should the voting age be reduced to 16?

7.   Should rainforests be cut down?

8.   Should the 2022 football world cup be held in Qatar?

9.   Child’s own idea (but please check with your teacher).

There will be no maths home learning set for the next three weeks as we will be expecting the children to plan, write and rehearse their presentation.  If you have any questions, please contact your class teacher.
